Explore the island along the nature trail
A beautiful nature trail runs right by Vaihela’s premises, perfect for a relaxing stroll for you to wind down and enjoy the breathtaking surroundings. In the summer, the path is home to Nordic dark bees. On your way down the trail you may spot both ordinary nests and mating nests in which the queen builds a home for a new bee community. The bees pose no danger to hikers on the nature trails, but do stay on the path and away from the nests as to not disturb their inhabitants.
The Nordic dark bee was the first farmed bee species that could successfully be overwintered in Finland. The Nordic dark bee nearly went extinct before it became a protected species in the late 1980’s. Vaihela is an ideal place for the bees’ mating nests as there is no danger of intermingling with other species on Velkuanmaa island.
